At least once a season I try and ride the Heaphy Track and usually it’s on our annual family trip. It’s been a few years now since we all did it as a family together. My kids have grown up riding this track and they still never tire from riding it.

Over the years my gear has changed and adapted, in the early years of riding with our kids we were pretty much human mules which got us into bike packing equipment, as riding with a massive backpack is no fun. Now each kid has their own equipment and is mostly self-sufficient.

From a food perspective, it has simplified over the years and we now use Absolute Wilderness Freeze dried meals. A recent addition, CLIF Bar has stream lined our snack food. Clothing on the Heaphy is key to a good experience - having the right shell wear and choosing the right combinations of wool and windproof layers. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the gear I take.
